Named
for the Kiawah Indians, the 10 mile-long island is a resort,
beach and sports destination as well as a private residential
community. There are four championship golf courses: March
Point designed by Gary Player; Turtle Point by Jack Nicklaus;
Osprey Point by Tom Fazio, and the links-style Ocean Course
designed by Pete Dye. The latter was the site of the 1991
Ryder Cup Matches and the 1997 World Cup of Golf. In addition,
there are 14 tennis courts, two conference centers and the
150-room Kiawah Island Inn as well as 300 villas. Future plans
include two ocean front hotels and a 40,000-square foot retail
village.
